Haters Gonna Hate. Transformers 3 & Me…

Yesterday morning I saw Transformers: Dark Of The Moon. Then I wrote about. Then the death threat arrived.

At the request of a number of interested parties I thought I’d collate some of the unusual activity that has occurred over at Hope Lies at 24 Frames Per Second over the last 24 hours. Over the course of the past 12 hours my sexuality has been called in to question as have my abilities as a writer and my political leanings. Most of the comments have made me smile, there’s only so much abuse one can take before becoming desensitised to it, so for that, I thank thee. Many of our regular readers have had a great time reading over some of the ones that were actually publishable.

A pair of eager Transformers fans prepare to take down Hope Lies towers.

A Transformers online forum decided to spam Hope Lies shortly after review went live. Some adventurous fellow called ‘thebruteslayer’ (seriously) gave the call to arms to wage intergalactic robot war on us, blindly defending a film he/she hasn’t actually seen. Anyway, spam they did. At least 50 comments didn’t make it through to the site, but I tried to be fair when letting any negative opinion through. Truth is, I’m not going to wade through countless abusive comments at 11pm at night when its easier to press the “Delete All” key. Apologies to those of you who had honest comments deleted along the way.

One of the claims thrown at me, and as a result the site, is that we’re elitist in our attitudes. Just to clarify, we here at Hope Lies at 24 Frames Per Second appreciate a well-made Blockbuster as much as the next guy. I think I speak for everyone here when I say that we all found the cinema via the big-budget blockbuster cinema of our respective youths, and are wholly ready and waiting for the likes of Spielberg, Nolan and Bay to impress us. Indeed, thus far this summer, we’ve positively reviewed Green Lantern, Thor and X-Men: First Class, so to say we’re “elitist” as many people have, is unfair, and factually incorrect. We cover everything here at Hope Lies. Also, to childishly claim that “you didn’t like it, therefore you’re lying about seeing it” is not fair either.

Nor does it do anything at all for the claims made against the film in my review. If anything, the aggressive, ill-written reactions from people that haven’t actually seen the film only reinforce my summation that in the words of a Twitter follower “proves your taking to be pretty accurate, regarding right-wing patriot (chauvinist) types”. So yeah, thanks guys.

  1. If you are a grown adult who gets so annoyed by a negative review of a Transformers movie, that you send a death thread, then it is time to re-evaluate your life.

  2. Dismissing someone’s opinion as elitism has to be one of the most childish ways to react to that opinion.

I mean, I’m all for a decent bit of brain dead Hollywood fodder, but the Transformers are utterly abysmal films. The second in particular is a sexist, racist and unbelievably dull piece of shit.

  3. It’s as if the word “critical” has lost all meaning. Perhaps this style of shotgun-to-the-face commenting reflects a trend towards anti-intellectualism?

  4. Did one of them say “I’ll rip out your optics!”?

  5. It’s a sad reflection on society today. I know from experience at another site whenever we published a negative/critical review about a major release the fanboys/girls would appear and unleash hatred. Regardless even if they had experienced the title in question.

To be fair, Bay doesn’t care about reviews in general, he’s only interested in box office. The man should be jettisoned into space along with the only copies of his films.

  6. Some people eh? Just because you are a fan of something doesn’t mean you can take umbrage at an unfavorable review of a film you have not yet seen.

Death Threats? Are you kidding me? I mean really? Surely you are joking right?

I believe the review was solid and evidence was given as to why the film failed to ignite the reviewers pleasure. It’s a review, you can take it or leave it.

  7. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at the comments in your review. They don’t seem real; they’re like parody patriots from a Trey Parker-Matt Stone production. They seem to understand humanity/women/ethnic minorities/LGBTQ community about as well as Michael Bay does. I keep going back to Mark Kermode’s comment about Michael Bay – if he wasn’t one of the world’s most wildly successful directors, he’d be directing porn, or rather adverts for porn. Just because he makes a lot of money and directs the adaptation of something considered a pantheon of nostalgia, that doesn’t mean he gets a free pass on his casual bigotry. I don’t care if he does it for humour, that doesn’t excuse any of it.

Sorry you had to go through all that BS.
