Monday Blu(e)s And DVD

A decided sense of the average hangs over this week’s batch of new home video releases.

Star – The cinematic definition of a mixed bag? Perhaps. The early trilogy of The Wrath Of Khan, The Search For Spock and The Voyage Home are fairly impressive, while the remainder are unremarkable at best. This timely reissue ahead of next month’s Star Trek Into Darkness ought to serve as a cautionary reminder of what J.J. Abrams means to Star Trek

Life Of Pi – A bemusing choice for winner of this Academy Award for best director, Ang Lee’s Life Of Pi is a technical marvel, albeit one filled to the brim with confused intentions.

Baron Blood – The presence alone of Joe Cotten sells this Mario Bava flick from the early 1970s. Arrow Video impress once again with a fairly stacked edition.
