Monday Blu(e)s And DVD

It’s one of those weeks. A whole bunch of fantastic films reach disc.

Disc Of The Week

Django Unchained – Quentin Tarantino’s Deep South Western-riffing buddy flick is one of the best films of 2013. Christoph Waltz and Jamie Foxx make for a compelling pair, while Leonardo DiCaprio sinks his teeth in to a memorable bad guy role. Check out our complete review here

The Murderer Lives at 21 – Henri-Georges Clouzot makes his first appearance in the Masters Of Cinema series, with a solid release of his first feature film. Ginette Vincendeau appears in a contextualising video interview, while further such contextualisation can be found in extensive programme notes.

The Complete (Existing Films) Of Sadao Yamanaka – Japanese filmmakers Sadao Yamanaka passed away aged just 29, but left behind a prodigious body of work, having produced over 20 films in the six years leading up to his death. Alas, only three survive, and they’re collected here in this 2-disc collection. Tange Sazen: The Million Ryô and Kôchiyama Sôshun stand alongside the more famous Humanity And Paper Balloons. Read more on Humanity And Paper Balloons here

Bullhead – Belgian film Bullhead, from director Michael R. Roskam saw a renewed sense of interest in the wake of the films star, Matthias Schoenaerts’ success under Jacques Audiard in Rust & Bone. It’s an interesting anti-thriller. More on Bullhead here.

Motel Hell – Never heard of it. Interesting artwork though.
